The Redemptive Names of God

In the late 1980s the author of this page came across a typewritten list of twenty seperate identified names of God from the Bible. All but one were from the Old Testament. They were given to me by the chap who was leading the Bible study group with which I was associated.

They are catalogued here, with each scriptural reference being included, to save your having to go and look. The translation used is the AV (Authorised Version).

Please note that the anglicised (English) names are used, with no attempt to interpret them in modern day Hebrew as seems to be the custom among some Christians. The only exception to this is in the brief discussion about the 'tetragrammaton' in the first one. The names appear in the original Hebrew, rather than in the English text.

Yahweh or Jehovah. This is a name that is derived from the original Hebrew - which was written without any vowels - the word being called the 'tetragrammaton'. This is the four letter word YHWH, which is also sometimes written JHVH or JHWH. The European letter W is actually pronounced as a long V and its J is pronounced as a Y, both of these also occurring in the pronunciation of the European Jewish communities.

The meaning is 'I am what I am' or 'I will be who I will be'.

Exo 3:14-16 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, the LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt:
